We leave quite
slowly today too, we take the ferry at Bari (about 150 km from here) at 10 pm for
Albania. Jens goes to buy some good bread, we go for a swim and we start at
11am. Pretty little road, along the coast and in the mountains. We could be in Spain,
many olive trees and a white village nestling in the mountains. But further,
the landscape changes, it becomes flat and swampy. We try to get closer to the
sea, but everything is private, with gates and fences. We stop at Zapponeta for
lunch but can’t find anything, so we picnic on a bench on a sidewalk. Then we
cross the city of Margharita di Savoa, city of salt. Near Bari, a level
crossing closes in front of us. It lasts, lasts and finally a train passes. But
the barrier doesn’t rise. And it lasts, lasts and finally a second train
passes. Italians are not the most patient people in the world and get
impatient, especially as a truck is struggling to cross a car. They honk and
even shout. We arrive at the harbor and without realizing it we come to a parking
marked "Albania", and it is very good: a guarded parking and free
shuttle bus to the center. We take the bus, but it drops us at 100 m outside
the port entrance and the center is far away. But we have time and walk along
the harbor which is huge. Pretty old town, fortress, cathedral and small narrow
streets. We take an orange juice in town and walk back to our bus. We are not
allowed to pass this entrance of the port on foot. It is 6 pm, we have time. I
work on the blog in the car, then at around 7 pm, we start moving forward. We
think first that we will take a very big ferry, but it is not ours, it goes to
Greece. We embark and go to our cabin. Funny, this ferry was Swedish before, a
note on the mirror in the cabin is in Swedish. Voilà. That's all for today. It
is 9 pm and we leave in an hour, the sea looks calm ... in the harbor.
