We dine on
Wednesday evening in the cafeteria on the ferry, good salad of crudites, fish
and ratatouille. The ferry, which was due to leave at 10 pm, was waiting for
late trucks and departed at 11:15 pm. Very calm crossing, the sea is flat. At 7
am, an announcement awakes us, the ferry is arriving at the port of Durres,
Albania. No problem with the passports and papers of the car, we pass quickly
the customs and here we are in Albania. Durres is a big city and we drive along
the main street to get out of the city. Shaded and animated street but the
traffic is fluid. We have breakfast in a restaurant and it is copious and good:
coffee, omelette, tomato, cucumber, cheese, ham, jam and bread, plus, surprise,
surprise, something that looks like "churros", this Spanish pastry, a
little greasy. All this for 10 € (100 kr) for two. A guy at the next table, an
Italian motorcyclist, tells us how much he loves Albania and Albanians. We
leave town and Jens wants to take a small road that runs along the sea. But
this little road quickly becomes a dirt road, even flooded at some places. We make
an u-turn and take a slightly larger road. The countryside is flat, very much built
along the road but we also see many unfinished and abandoned buildings. We
drive about 30 km and, with the GPS help, find a campsite by the sea. The
arrival at the campsite is not pretty, a bumpy road, garbage on the sides, but
the campsite itself is good, shady lots, good sanitary block and above all an (artificial)
island that is reached by a footbridge. When we arrive, at lunch time, the
weather is overcast. We have lunch then put the awning. At around 2 pm, we go
to the island, this is the only place on the campsite where we can have
internet. I start the blog and all of a sudden, a gust of strong wind comes
with rain and thunder. We quickly get back to the car and see two neighbors
trying to save our awning that threatens to fly away. Nice people. We roll the
awning and we shelter in the car. It's raining cats and dogs, and it's dark. We
stay inside, both of us with a good book. During a lull, we put the awning down
but tie it to a tree, then we go for awalk. We had noticed some sort of old
fortress on a hill, so we're going to see it... walking in sticky mud. And the
"fortress" turns out to be made of concrete blocks. The weather is
getting better and we dine at the restaurant on the island.
