We have
breakfast together and Mario goes to work. I see on my phone that a German
number has called me three times and I think it may be Anne, my niece who lives
in Nuremberg. I sent her an SMS and an email yesterday evening. I call back and
we are very happy to get back in touch. What is curious is that yesterday
morning, without knowing that we were in Austria, she called me in Norway. It's
really a funny coincidence, we have not spoken over the phone for years and we try
to take contact again on both sides the same day, by chance. We will try to see
each other. It's raining, so we're waiting a bit to cycle to the center of
Vienna. I do a washing machine and put the clothes to dry in the room besides
our bedroom. While I do that, I hear somebody knocking downstairs. I think it
is Jens fixing something. I go on putting the clothes to dry and go down. I realize
then that it is poor Jens knocking on the front door, he is locked up outside! The
rain stops and we leave at 11 o'clock. It's 11 km to go to town, but it's a
pleasure to ride a bike here: good bike paths, respect from cars and well
thought routes for cyclists. And now it's sunny and mild. We leave the bikes
and walk a little in town, then go for a light lunch in a Chinese restaurant.
We want to taste then the famous Vienna chocolate cake and go to a tea room on
Stephansplatz, the big square in front of the cathedral and it's a mistake, the
cake is quite average, and expensive. We return by making a detour to an island
in the middle of the Danube, pleasant and without cars. On the way back, we
pass at the foot of the big 57-storey modern tower, we ask if we can climb to
the top to have a nice view, but no, the restaurant upstairs opens at 6 pm. We
go home to Mario’s house after a beautiful ride of more than 30 km. Mario comes
home, we cook together and eat again very well. After dinner, Jens and he speak
seismology and I finish the blog, then we talk together with a cup of coffee.
