Walk in town
before leaving. It is early but the market is already active. Jens wants to buy
honey but the lady doesn’t speak English. She calls another lady who has a
nearby booth and asks her to translate. This lady speaks good English and, after
translating for honey, asks us where we come from. When we answer Norway, she
starts, to our great surprise, to speak Danish! A Serbian lady who speaks
Danish! She spent 12 years in Denmark as a child and a young girl. She prefers
to speak English, she says she has forgotten Danish a little because she doesn’t
practice. She sells mushrooms that she grows herself and small cakes. She shows
me a nice chocolate cake she made for an order. We are talking about our
families, she has two grown children who live in the United States. I'm
surprised, she's young, she tells me she's 58 years old. I take a picture, with
her permission, but the picture is dark, we don’t see well. Jens pays her in Euros
and she gives us change in dinars. We then return to the hotel and leave. After
a few km, the road is blocked and no deviation is indicated, but we find a
small road that must be the good one because all the trucks take it. Then we
find the highway and drive well. It is flat and we have the wind in the back,
we reach 110 km / h without problem. The landscape is an immense plain, as far
as one can see. We pass Belgrade on the highway, very large city, also cross a
bridge over the Danube and continue. We arrive at Subotica, the city where Jens
has booked a room. The outskirts of the city are not particularly beautiful,
but when we go for a walk, the center is monumental, large official buildings,
cathedral, large avenues and many trees. And as yesterday, we go to a
restaurant recommended by the hotel, they are booked from 19 pm, but we can
dine right away. We do it, it's 5 pm. We are eating early since yesterday. The
meal is average and the portions are too big. We take coffee in a tea room ...
which doesn’t accept cards or Euros and we don’t have enough dinars. Jens therefore
draw 500 dinars, about 5 € at a nearby ATM. We go back and work, we have a long
evening today too.
