C’est « now or never !

October 2019
It's raining and
it's cold (8 ˚ and windy). We went from summer (yesterday) to fall (today). We
make our breakfast in "our" apartment, and our plan was to go for a
walk in town, but it is raining hard and we decide to stay home. We are
working, Jens is doing seismology and I'm doing the blog. We leave at 10 am and
drive in the rain. The landscape is first mountainous, then a sort of wavy
steppe and finally flat, flat. At one point, in the morning, we enter a tunnel
in the rain and come out at the other end of the tunnel without rain. We leave
the highway around noon to try to find a café. We cross a pretty miserable
village without café, so we come back on the highway and take our coffee in a café
there. We cross the border North Macedonia-Serbia around 1 pm, without problem.
Motorways in Macedonia and Serbia are toll roads but can be paid in euros
(which is not their currency). Later, we want to stop for our picnic but during
more than 60 km, there is nothing, neither parking nor gas station. We stop at
2:30 pm on a primitive parking and have lunch in 10 minutes. Jens booked a room
in Kruševac, an middle town a bit off the highway. So we take a small road
through villages. We notice many abandoned houses. Poverty ? War? We arrive in
Kruševac at 4 pm. The GPS finds the street of the hotel and I park in front of
a big house. Jens goes to the front desk and explains that he has a
reservation. The receptionist looks at him with big eyes and doesn’t
understand, first because she doesn’t speak English and then because it is not
a hotel, but a clinic. She understands the word "hotel" and makes it
clear that it's two houses away. During that time, I had parked the car in the
parking lot of this so-called hotel and we need to get it out again. We settle
in the real hotel and go to discover the city. No casino here, but same
difficulty to find a restaurant. A gentleman who speaks English tells us of one,
the best of the city according to him. We go there and ask if we can come back around 7 am. The guy,
very nice, laughs and says no! They are booked from 7 am, but if we want we can
dine right now. It's "now or never! It's 5 o'clock! Ok, we sit down and we
don’t regret it. It's very good, local and the wine is excellent, so good that
Jens buys two bottles here at the restaurant! The guy offers us two small
glasses of plum alcohol ... that would wake the dead. We leave very happy ...
We finished dinner at 6:45 pm and go back to the hotel, it's cold outside.
