Un mois qu’on est
parti.

A month that we
left.
We leave at
10:30 am, south by a good four-lane road. One thing to note: the service
stations are numerous, in 50 km we see perhaps 30! And the traffic is light,
how can they survive? We arrive at Votle, a big port and a big city. We cross
the city by the main street, very nice. One way in each direction for cars and
sidewalks very wide and shaded for pedestrians. I succeeded, and I'm proud of
it, a niche to park the car and we walk in town. Jens wants to buy pitons and
rope to secure the awning, but there is no camping shop. So we go to a hardware
store that has everything. The guy only speaks a few words of English, we try
"corda" and he understands. Then Jens wants to buy screwdrivers
because he can’t find a piton. And the guy, a clever guy, guesses the connection
rope and screwdrivers! He laughs, asks us where we come from and we leave the
best friends in the world. We buy fruit at the market and, at the end of the
market, have lunch at a mini-café-restaurant. They only have one customer and
one dish. The boss shows us the plate of the lady and makes us understand that
it is that, and basta. So we take macaroni and sausage and raw tomatoes served
with fresh cheese and we pay 6 € (60 kr) for two! We leave, drive along the sea
and then climb the mountain. The higher we go, the colder it is and the wind is
stronger and stronger. At the top, it 14 ˚ (and 30 ˚ down on the coast). Nice
view of the coast. We go down again and at an intersection we must choose: to
go along the sea by a small road or to pass by the mountain by a bigger road.
Jens wants to go along the sea. Let's go. But the small road becomes a track
and the track becomes a bad track, stony and sloping. We park the car and go on
foot. It gets even worse later, impractical except for 4x4s. We decide to turn
around and fortunately we have room to do it, and go back to the intersection
and take the road by the mountain. We are lucky to find a nice camping on the
sea in the village of Livadh Himare and for the first time in a long time
(already in Italy) has paper in the toilet and soap for washing hands. We want
to eat at the campsite restaurant but it is full. So we dig into our reserves
and eat our tomatoes and a can of minestrone. The cats are happy to lick the
dishes.
