18.10.2019. Kalamos
Vendredi 18
octobre 2019
Toujours calme,
aujourd’hui. Nous y arrivons à 14 h 30. Nous nous préparons pour toutes les éventualités :
le long du quai ou perpendiculaire.

Still calm,
beautiful and warm. We take our time and leave, after a good swim, at around
11:30. The sea is flat, not a breath. We motor without forcing it. We have
lunch on the way and we are heading slowly towards Kalamos, a port that we like
on the island of the same name. It's at a distance of 10 nm, that is two hours
with an average of 5 knots, but it takes us three hours today. We arrive there
at 2.30 pm. We prepare for all eventualities: along the dock or perpendicular.
Jens goes to prepare the anchor back when he hits the corner of the solar panel
which is sharp. He makes (again, see Italy) a hole in his head and bleeds a
lot. I dry it with paper towels and then he put his cap back on this improvised
bandage. The long dock is practically empty so we want to put ourselves along,
when George, who considers himself the port master, tells us "no, no,
no" with big signs of arms. I answer him "yes, yes, yes"
(without signs of arms). But he explains that he is waiting for a group of
charters and that we can’t go alongside. But he offers us another place, along
a dock opposite in the port. Ok, it's a good place. Our neighbors are two
catamarans from Australia. We are going to drink our ankerdram at George's
cafe. He tells us that this heat is not normal for the end of October. Then we walk to a chapel above the village. It's
really hot, it goes up and we are sweaty and tired. But a swim on the large
beach with turquoise waters puts us back on track. Back on Hera II, blog and
dinner at a cafeteria in the center of the village. The young couple who owns
it is very nice and remembers us. The young woman comes to see us at our table
and tells us that they had a difficult summer: they did not have water for 20
days in August, the island doesn’t have enough water and the water comes from Mitika,
the city opposite on the mainland. The pipe that is at the bottom of the sea
was broken and it took 20 days to repair it. And for them August is the best
month of the year, normally. They are open all year, but with a population of
150 in winter, they don’t earn that much. We dine well, pay 16 € for two (!)
And in addition she gives us half a liter of wine to take home.
